MAKING AN IMPACT

WHAT WE DO

The National Mustang Association Colorado (NMACO) supports the ethical and humane treatment of wild horses, whether subject to the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, or any other federal or state law. The NMACO promotes and implements sustainable, conscious, and humane wild horse management and care practices through education, advocacy, fieldwork, research, and stakeholder collaboration.

Adopt a Horse

When horses are removed from their home ranges in the wild, NMACO advocates for habituation and bait-trapping procedures and low-stress handling to minimize the wild horses’ negative interactions with humans. A wild horse that is not traumatized or in a constant “fight or flight” response is at less risk for injury and safer to be around. Horses that have experienced more positive interactions with humans are more receptive to domestication and training. Sometimes, the best alternative for a horse taken from the wild is to be domestically rehomed through adoption. Learn more about adoptions here.

SUPPORT WILD HORSES BY SUPPORTING NMACO

Horses removed from the wild have two safer options that NMACO supports. The least disruptive is placement in a reputable sanctuary setting. The other is placement through domestic adoption, particularly when sanctuary space is limited. Neither approach is easy.  Dedication, compassion, financial resources, time, energy and expertise are critical elements that NMACO employs to accomplish its horse-centric mission, especially if the horses are not protected under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.  NMACO is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization and deeply appreciates every bit of support from gracious donors who wish to ensure the well-being of wild horses in the Southwest. Please join NMACO in safeguarding these majestic beings.

JOIN AS A VOLUNTEER

Indeed, teamwork makes the dream work! NMACO is powered by volunteers who can dedicate their time, expertise, and energy to a worthy mission. As needs arise, NMACO posts volunteer and internship opportunities here.
